Canadian Authors and Illustrators Against Book Bans is a coalition of Canadian writers and illustrators working to promote and protect the freedom to read. We understand book bans and book challenges as part of a larger movement to erase voices in our culture, particularly BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ writers, and we refuse to let this happen. We believe that Canadian writers and illustrators speak truthfully about essential human experiences, and we defend our right to do so.
As a virtual community of writers and illustrators, we are committed to working together and with others to respond when book bans or challenges happen or are threatened. Our goal is to create a network of creators that can write letters in support of libraries, schools, teachers and students, speak out against challenges, turn up to protest, offer support and solidarity to writer and illustrators whose books are challenged, and take part in local, provincial and national initiatives to oppose book bans and censorship.
CAIABB is focused on fighting book challenges and bans that happen in Canada. We encourage all Canadian authors and illustrators to add their voices. To learn more, check out our resources page, and to join, click here.
